Chief Judge:
JEAN-FRANÇOIS HAMEL

A highly versatile musician, Jean-François Hamel earned his master’s degree at the Conservatoire de Musique de Québec in 1996. He has performed in more than 1,500 shows— classical, pop, jazz and blues—and accompanied renowned Quebec artists from the four corners of the province on tour in no fewer than 10 Asian countries. A dedicated teacher and arranger, he has taught a large number of guitarists and judged several competitions, most notably the Concours de musique Clermont-Pépin semi-finals in 2005 and 2007. Since 2006, he has been the chair of the Montreal Guitar Grand Prix judges’ panel.

Classical:
DENIS POLIQUIN

Denis Poliquin studied at the Conservatoire de Québec and the Banff School of Fine Arts, where he trained with the renowned Kenny Wheeler and Dave Holland. Winner of the first prize in composition at the Carrefour mondial de la guitare in Martinique (1984 and 1986), he has since played as a soloist at numerous festivals and on Radio-Canada, in the SI ÇA VOUS JAZZ duo with Marc Bélanger and in the NEJ quartet, of which he is a founding member. He is a composer/arranger and performer with Kim Yaroschevskaya and has taught at various music conservatories in Quebec. Now associated with the Domaine Forget, he is also the director of the Académie de Guitare de Montréal and vice-president of the Société de Guitare de Montréal.

Blues/rock:
GUILLAUME DOIRON

Guillaume Doiron hasn’t been sitting around since earning his diplomas in classical music and jazz from Campus Notre-Dame-de-Foy in Québec: shows with Andrée Watters, Catherine Durand, Charles Dubé, Jonas, Richard Séguin, Marie-Mai, Marie-Pierre Arthur, Caracol, France D’Amour and Boom Desjardins; performing on albums by such artists as Projet Orange, Annie Villeneuve and Éric Bélanger; TV appearances including Bons baisers de France, Salut Bonjour and Musique Plus; and even ads for McDonald, Energizer and Desjardins.

Acoustic:
JASON LANG

Son of Canadian folk music legend Penny Lang and the late renowned American folk singer Dave Van Ronk, Jason Lang has succeeded in developing his own style, rooted in folk and pop traditions. Before releasing his debut album Beautiful Disguise, he toured North America and Europe with artists such as Amanda Marshall, The McGarrigle Sisters, Roch Voisine, Isabelle Boulay, Richard Seguin, Luce Dufault and France D’amour, to name but a few. As a respected composer, he has had several Top 10 and Top 20 Canadian country hits (What You Mean to Me) with Loggerhead recording artist Denise Murray. He has also won three Felix Awards.

Jazz:
SYLVAIN PROVOST

A leading light on Quebec's jazz scene, guitarist Sylvain Provost made his debut appearance at the tender age of 20 at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal. Since then, he has racked up 25 years of countless professional collaborations with the likes of Gerry Boulet, Oliver Jones, Yannick Rieu, Jean‑Pierre Zanella, Jean Vanasse, Coco Zhao, Terez Montcalm, Karen Young, Sylvain Lelièvre, François Marcaurelle, and La La La Human Steps. With his long-time bassist cohort, Norman Lachapelle, he has produced a host of recordings, winning nominations and awards at the ADISQ, JUNO and Opus Awards. He is currently putting together an album with his new trio.
